Abstract

Aim. The purpose of this work is to systematize the structural components of the resource potential and determine methodological approaches to its study. According to the stated goal, the authors identified the main ways of rational use of the resource component of the region. It is determined that many Russian regions have significant natural resources, but face uneven economic development and poor diversification.

Procedure and methods. The article classifies various theoretical views of Russian and foreign regionalists on the definition of such important concepts as “region”, “resources”, “potential”, “efficiency in the use of resource potential”. The instrumental base for assessing the resource potential of the region is disclosed, taking into account the cost method and the income method with the determination of the possible capitalization of income.

Results. In the course of the work, the authors proved that in order to remain competitive and innovative, regions must transform their economies towards higher technological structures, balancing the structural elements of their resource potential.

Research Implications: the authors managed to substantiate that for the optimal use of the resources of a particular region and their effective management, it is necessary to maintain a balance between the various components that make up its structure.
